Environment is what shortens a receiver’s life, and Lincolnshire supplies the worst of it: unheated barns and workshops where warm compressed air meets cold steel, condensate collects, and the drain valve has not been touched in years. Internal corrosion at the water line is the single most common serious finding, and it is completely invisible from outside.

Under PSSR 2000 the system must have a Written Scheme of Examination and must have been examined in accordance with it before it is operated. The threshold is 250 bar litres of stored energy — pressure in bar multiplied by volume in litres — and any receiver of a useful size in a farm or workshop passes that comfortably.

For sites in this condition the scheme frequently sets a shorter interval than the 24 to 26 months typical of a dry indoor unit, and specifies internal examination where a purely external one would miss what matters. We draw up the scheme where there is none, review inherited ones against the plant as installed, and cover the compressor, pipework and protective devices in the same visit as everything else on site.
