Height safety equipment is the easiest thing on a Derby site to lose track of. It is portable, it gets shared between operatives, it lives in vans and lockers rather than bolted to a floor, and unlike a forklift nobody notices when it is missing from the schedule.
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require a detailed inspection by a competent person at least every six months, reducing to three where use is arduous — and for a lot of Derby work it is arduous. Grit and swarf in a fabrication bay, hot work nearby, kit rolled up wet in the back of a van on a Friday. That is exactly the service life that degrades webbing fastest.
We inspect and tag per item, against its own serial number, with a record of the verdict and the next due date. A box of six harnesses is not an asset register; six individually logged harnesses are, and only one of those can be evidenced after an incident.
